Blanketflower (Gaillardia aristata)

About this plant

Blanketflower grows on sunny, well-drained sites in prairie meadows and semi-open brush mixed with trees. It is frequently found on dry, south-facing slopes with little moisture. Blanketflower grows at elevations from 1,300 to 9,000 feet and can be found along roadsides, rocky slopes, and ridgetops. Blanketflower has a long bloom period, from early spring through seed ripening in late summer. It is a mid-summer maturing species in sagebrush communities.

Sun/Soil Needs

Sun: Full, direct sunlight with at least 6-8 hours of sun a day.

Soil: Thrives in sandy, rocky, or poor soil. While drought-tolerant once established, they need regular water during their first year

Growth & Sizing

Typically grows into a mound 18–36 inches (45–90 cm) tall and 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) wide.

Garden Design Tips

Blanketflower is used to increase species diversity in native plant seed mixes for the rehabilitation of disturbed sites. It is suitable as an ornamental wildflower in low-maintenance or natural landscapes, and its drought tolerance makes it a good candidate for waterwise gardens and low-watering zones. Can be used as a scatter plant (or tiny repeats)—self-seeds, so if not deadheaded, will begin to appear like a light 'drift' over time.
