Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera)
About this plant
It is most prominent in the northern and interior regions of the province and is famous for its resinous, sweet-smelling buds. In the southern and coastal parts of BC, it is typically represented by its closely related subspecies, the Black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa).
Locally, these trees thrive in floodplains, river bottomlands, and wet, moist soils.
